Missionaries in October

Life is going well! We are working everyday and loving it. Our Preparation Day is tomorrow and this is our schedule: District Meeting at 10:30 to 1:00, Temple Prep Class 2:30 to 4:00, Feed Missionaries at 6:00, Team Teach till 9:30! It will be a good day, but what about the laundry and grocery shopping! That's OK, it will get done!
We had an interesting day at the Tabernacle yesterday. We got there before 10:00 (when it opens) and there were already people waiting for us, they did not know about the winter schedule and had been there since 9:30. I just got them in the theater, and here came a family of four, took them on a tour and got them in the theater and the others over to the Tabernacle, and here came two non-members - they asked many questions which I was able to answer (thank goodness)! They had a wonderful spirit about them and really were interested in the church but only for learning its origin. Who knows, seeds planted sometimes sprout after much thinking! Then a family from Canada came in, they were great, so sweet. New Zealanders came next along with a girl that was hearing impaired - a very interesting day!
We are loving our mission and we sure love all of you. Thank you for all your blog updates and all the wonderful pictures. I will try pictures again when I have time to think about how to do it. Brent told me and I wrote it all down, but I havn't tried it yet! We have some great pictures!!!

Nebraska Omaha Winter Quarters Mission - 3 wkks in

We are here, we are settled in, and we are lovin life. We work five days a week at either the Mormon Trail Center or the Kanesville Tabernacle and Visitors Center. We enjoy both! At the Tabernacle I give the tours at the Visitors Center about the treck across Iowa and settleing in at Concil Bluffs and Winter Quarters and the Mormon Battalion, then Elder Mangum gives the tour thru the Tabernacle itself. It is an amazing building with a impressive history (where Brigham Young was sustained as the second president of the Church). The rest of the days are spent at the Trail Center. There I sit at the front desk, count the visitors, keep a log, greet and talk with visitors when they wish, and answer the phone. We are taking quilts for a quilt exhibit to start next week and I have to sign the quilts in and make sure everything is properly marked. Elder Mangum keeps order, takes tours of adult males that are alone, supervises the downstairs activities, opens up and close - his duties are many. On Fridays or day starts at 8:30am and goes till 9:30pm. We work in the temple from 8:30 to 1:30, have a quick lunch then go to the trail center and work there til 9:00pm, a long day but very rewarding. We get up early, try our best to be in bed by 10:30, sometimes we make it! We will also work at the temple on the third Saturday every month for a Spanish Speaking Session - I'm not sure if I work or not, we will see. We are in the Conastoga Branch (Small but with a big heart). We will be helping the missionaries with the less actives and we will have calling in the Branch. Elder Mangum is the Gospel Essentials Teacher, and he and I will both teach the Temple Prep Class, we taught that in Leesville for many years!!! I have not gotten a calling in the Branch yet but it will come.
What is the hardest thing about our mission? Calling my husband Elder Mangum - hence I am practicing here! What is the greatest thing about our mission - It's all great, the Spirit is here in abundance, the Sisters and Elders are wonderful to work with, the work we do is important to those that visit, and we are in the service of our God. What more can we ask!!!

Preparing

July 8, 2010
The house and yard are looking good, the shop storage room is just about finished, the packing has begun. We will be set apart as Missionaries on July 13 at the Stake Center in Alexandria. We will be leaving for Utah on July 23 driving the truck so Mark can keep it while we are away; will spend a week with Mark and family, we will also visit some good friends in Utah while we are there. Dorothy Waddell is one of the people we will see, she and her family brought me into the church. Then on Aug 2 we will enter the MTC, I guess that is the point of no return! W leave the MTC on Aug 12 and fly back to Alexandria, pack the car and head for Nebraska. We are excited, we are aprehensive, we are happy, and we are sad (to leave our children and grandchildren for the next 18 months is going to be hard). However, this is what we have always wanted to do, it is time, and we are going! It will be great!

Much has happened since I last wrote! The best of the best retirement parties was put on for Carl and I by Dr. Meadaa and our children --- all ten of them and all of the grandchildren! It was exquisit, wonderful, awesome, supercalafragilasticexpealadochs! There are no words to express our gratitude! All "MY GIRLS and their spouses (from work) were there - so special; and they did all the cooking! Many friends were there, Jan and Jasper were there, many nice words were said, many tears were shed, and a family picture happened. You can't really beat that weekend, I don't think it can be done - physically impossible!
Now three weeks later we are awaiting our mission call any day - so exciting - the place doesn't really matter, but the arrival date is MUCHO IMPORTANTE! Are we going to get all our house ready in time! We are working hard, but there is so much to do! Time will tell its story and we will leave done or not!
I am nervous, I am excited, I am happy, I am sad, I am anxious, I am stressed, the list goes on, but one thing is for certain --- we will go!

All the interviews are done! The mission papers are in Salt Lake - now we wait! Should be in about three or four weeks! I am nervous!!! Thanks to everyone who has been such a support!

As of Sunday Carl and I began the waiting game! Waiting for a long white envelope that will tell us where and how long we will be gone on our Mission for the Lord! It is exciting and, even though no one will see this, worth sharing! We have lived our "Empty Nest Years" waiting for the time that we could go on a Mission. We are now totally out of debt, hoping we can stay that way, and it feels great! Hoping that we can "make it" on our retirement, watch out if we can't, Wal Mart here we come, Greeters you Know!

Today is Mother's Day, a day that is wonderful for some and most difficult for others. I wish my five daughters a very Happy Mother's Day and I hope that for each of you the day is special.

My Mom passed away very close to Mother's Day and I still miss her even though we were not really very close, I loved her very much. Some days I find myself thinking, I think I'll call Mom and tell her about this, then I remember!

Make the most of the time you have with your Mother, they will not always be around when you may need them the most.

Saturday January 30 2010! Today was a good day - - we went to the church and cleaned, it is always nice to see the chapel looking like we care! THen I babysat for a young couple for a couple of hours, went to the commissary - spent money! Then I got to stay home --- that was great! Not too many of those kind of Saturdays at the Mangum Pad, but sure enjoy it when it happens. Life is good and I would post pictures, Aaron, but I can't get them to work. This computer and I are not too good of friends. Hope you all have a happy day - it is cold, but not too cold.

It is already January 23, 2010 - where is time going? I am already trying to figure out what I have to do to close the house, there is so much to think about! Time is flying and getting short, I am scared! I sent four sons out on missions, but I am apprehensive to go myself --- how can that be --- there is something wrong with this picture! "There is nothing to fear but fear itself!" who said that - Ben Franklin? I don't remember! All will be well! Faith - faith of a mustard seed!

Happy New Year to each of you and may 2010 be as good if not better than 2009. Many happenings of late! New homes, new babies, sick babies, graduations, building homes, and plans for a mission! We love each of you, we respect the adults you have become, and we are proud of all of you! Let the fun began, but lets all remember from whence cometh our help! He will never fail us and He will always be as far away as a prayer! Love you all, Mom

HAPPY BIRTHDAY DAVID!!!!

After almost 40 years of marriage to this man I am still learning who he is, he amazes me! He has more energy than the "Energizer Bunny", he is a strong spiritual giant, he loves the Lord and serves Him faithfully whatever the call, and he is mine! Life is good! Our children are all strong, solid individuals who also love the Lord and they have wonderful spouses to help them along, they also have wonderful grandchildren for us to play with! We are simple people, we don't have much in the way of worldly riches, but we are rich in what counts most -- love, faithfulness, honesty, and love of fellow man.

Eternal Marriage to this man is a gift from God and I am so grateful. Once again, Happy Birthday to my Sweetheart, and many, Many, MANY MORE!

Thirty-six years ago today at 12:00 noon our beautiful daughter left the presence of her Heavenly Father and entered into our lives. The best, most wonderful, most beautiful little girl ever born. She has given us great joy and happiness every day of her life and we love her. We just can't believe that she is so old when we are still so young! Thank you, Laurie, for choosing to come to our family and make us complete. Our first born, after several years of no children, then we had five, what's up with that!!! We love them all!

To our oldest Grandson, HAPPY NINTH BIRTHDAY! How we wish we could have been there to share in your celebration, however, you were in our thoughts and in our hearts. Nine Years Old, it is so hard to believe that you are growing so fast. Nana and Papa sure love you and hope that your day was one that you will always remember as being the best, until next year!

The Family is Growing!

We are thrilled at the upcoming marriage of Brent and Robin. We relive our own marriage each time one of our children ventures into the joy of married bliss! Of course it isn't all BLISS! But the tough times are what make the good times so great. We are also pleased to welcome a new grandchild into the family, Dakota is such a sweet and smart little guy; 3 grandsons, and 8 granddaughters, what a blessing! We are looking forward to spoiling them all.
I know that each of you are feeling the same as your Dad and I. We are sad to loose President Hinkley, but so happy he is HOME with his sweet wife, how he has missed her. He was a great man, a giant among men, we will miss him.
Several of you are digging out of snow drifts, your dad and I are trying to dry out our webbed feet, much rain has blessed the area, we are grateful. Good luck with the SNOW.
We sure love all of you and are looking forward to seeing you in June. Jordan, we are so sorry that you cannot be here, however I am looking forward to seeing you in May! Babies take presidence over everything else!

Thanksgiving was truly a time of thankfulness for the Mangum Clan this year! First, for the first time in 17 years we were all together for Thanksgiving; Dad, Mom and all five children, what a blessing! To add to that, we had all except Laurie & Tims 3 children and Tim; how we missed them! Then as icing on the cake, Mark and Janna took Rylee to the Ogden Temple and she was sealed to our family. Both Lauren and Rylee were in white, they looked like angels and Mark and Janna were just thrilled as we all were! It was a beautiful trip and a wonderful family reunion with the Calls as well as with our family! It was a great time! The below pictures are from that trip!
